Multiple studies have found that frequently requiring overtime hours from employees can increase costs that go beyond payroll wages. Frequent overtime has been linked to decreased quality, increased errors, and lower productivity. Physical health is also shown to be affected, including higher stress levels, blood pressure, fatigue, and increased on-the-job injuries.
Some states have industry-specific laws, mainly in the healthcare industry, that prohibit mandatory overtime. Be sure work is being performed both lawfully and safely before requiring overtime of your employees.
